In Tandem

In Tandem is a new project, working with visually impaired people in the West of Scotland. The aim is to provide tandems and training to pilots and stokers and by the end of the project, help to set up one or more tandem cycling clubs

We all understand that physical activity is good for our mental and physical health and wellbeing, but many people are unable to easily participate in physical activity, active travel or sport for a wide variety of reasons.

Cycling UK is passionate about enabling everyone, whatever their age, ability, or background to cycle, and has an established programme of projects that support people to get pedalling on a cycle that meets their needs and support that empowers them.

Based on discussions with individuals that have contacted us and our colleagues at RNIB Scotland, we aim to support the development of VI tandem cycling programmes in the west of Scotland.

Experience suggests that having a development officer is vital in supporting groups to:

  • Develop
  • Organise pilot training
  • Bring (sighted) pilots and (VI) stokers together for rides
  • Organise outreach activities and encourage participation.

Emerging clubs will be owned by the members, and we can provide support and guidance to club members to enable them to write a constitution, should they wish to do so.

The level of sports participation amongst visually impaired people has remained consistently low in comparison to non-disabled people and even other disability groups, with only 13% of people with visual impairment taking part in sport once a week
