Homeless charity needs volunteer cyclist to take the lead

H3 is an amazing charity which works to support homeless people in Stockport - but its cycling scheme has been put on hold.

Many of the individuals and families H3 help are living in temporary accommodation, perhaps due to fininacial hardship, mental health probelms or relationship breakdowns. Much of H3's work is therefore aimed at re-building confidence and creating new opportunities, as the start of a new chapter in life.

The Cycling UK-affiliated H3 Supported Cycling Scheme is one fantastic way of doing this; it enables people experiencing homeless to get out and about on group cycling rides. The rides cater for all abilities, and offer vast benefits to physical and mental health in a positive and social atmosphere. They are also something for families to look forward to at weekends in particular, when there is little available to those living temporary accommodation. Each group cycle is led by two cycle leaders, who plan the route, co-ordinate the ride, and ensure group safety and, most importantly, enjoyment!

However, a shortage of these valuable volunteers has put a stop to the scheme – but hopefully only a temporary one. The group is searching for its next wave of cycle leaders to get involved and keep this brilliant project going. The more cycle leaders, the more rides are run, and the greater the impact can be.

This charity is an incredible motivator for the people it helps, and its cycling project can make a real difference in improving someone’s self-confidence at a difficult and uncertain point in their life.

Caroline Parker-Holland, Cycling UK's Cycling Development Officer for Manchester

Molly Bishop, charity support and development officer for Stockport Homes, said: "One individual, for whom cycling was a passion, got a lot out of the group and went on to become a ride leader. His commitment and dedication to the group helped in his bid for a tenancy and he was able to move on from temporary accommodation.

"Another participant, who spent time in care, really struggled with his anger and behaviour. Going out on group rides helped him to relax and clear his head. He would always look forward to them and just have the best time."

It a commitment of just a few hours every other week. Bikes and equipment are provided, and free ride leader training is potentially available if needed.
